Intercessory prayer is persevering prayers whereby someone pleads with God on behalf of others who need God's intervention.
All believers are commanded by God to pray for others and leaders that are in authority in all walks of life. Each believer is called to be a priest unto God, with Christ as the High Priest. The Apostles in the New Testament followed the examples set in the Old Testament regarding intercessory prayer, and frequently asked fellow Christians to pray on their behalf, interceding for them, and they did likewise. Intercession is commanded by God for it is pleasing to Him.
1Timothy 2:1-6 1 Pray much for others; plead for God's mercy upon them; give thanks for all He is going to do for them. 2 Pray in this way for kings and all others who are in authority over us, or are in places of high responsibility, so that we can live in peace and quietness, spending our time in godly living and thinking much about the Lord. 3 This is good and pleases God our Saviour, 4 for he longs for all to be saved and to understand this truth: 5 That God is on one side and all the people on the other side, and Christ Jesus, himself man, is between them to bring them together, 6 by giving his life for all mankind. This is the message that at the proper time God gave to the world. |
There are many things to be accomplished in God's Kingdom through
the use of the believer's intercessory prayers, throughout the world, who
all belong to the same Body of Christ, and are members, adopted heirs in
God's Kingdom.
Intercession is the way that leads to saving and keeping of souls in the
Christian family.
Believers need to be in an obedient relationship with God, for they have been made righteous before Him because of Christ, His Birth, Life, Death, Resurrection, His Ascension and His Glorification, and they need to be persistent in prayer.
Intercessory prayer is persevering prayers whereby someone pleads with God on behalf of others who need God's intervention.
The intercessory ministry is made available
to all believers in The Body of Christ.
Jesus Himself prayed for the lost, those for whom He came to
save. He also prayed a High Priestly intercessory prayer for His Apostles
and for future believers.
The Holy Spirit intercedes for believers. He helps believers when they are involved in intercessory prayer. The Holy Spirit intercedes in accordance with God's will as He prays within the believer.
Believers also intercede corporately on behalf of individuals. It is not uncommon for saints to gather together to pray for certain issues that need the wisdom of God, His guiding hand, and Divine oversight.
Mainly intercessory prayer is used for seeking God's wisdom for the Body of Christ, for restoration to deliver individual saints from physical danger, as well as spiritual protection from the evil one, for spiritual growth, for nations, for lost people to experience God's love and for them to seek out the knowledge of the Truths of Christ.
Some believers in The Body of Christ
have a special anointed ministry in the area of intercessory prayer. Usually
these intercessors will pray for God's power to be manifested by The Holy
Spirit for healing, for effective missionary work according to God's will,
time and purpose.
An intercessor needs to know God's will in these special situations and
occasions. The Holy Spirit directs the prayer of the intercessor, enabling
effective prayer. The intercessor carries the burden of the people to God's
heart by an inspired act of devotion, and in some cases will be involved
in spiritual warfare. Persistence in prayer continues until the victory
is secured.
Intercessors struggle for righteousness, as they understand God's purposes. Striving in prayer is not to be seen as in opposition to God's will and purposes. It is usually a conflict within the person between self-will and dependence upon God. An intercessor must be submissive to God's Divine Will as they strive to seek His will.
Great battles in the spiritual realm have been won and lives have been changed by the power of intercessory prayer.
Jesus indicated main themes for authority in certain
types of intercessory prayer
-the casting out of evil forces from the hearts
of those in darkness and despair, under deception
-for the extension of God's Kingdom in the
hearts and minds of people everywhere
-for love towards a Christian persecutor or
enemy.
Christians are commanded by love to pray for each other and
usually prayers contain worship and adoration to God, humility, confession
and repentance, requests and petitions, praying in line with the will of
God for His intervention and thanksgiving,
in the Name of The Lord Jesus Christ, and all that it stands for.
Christians are to be active in the world and therefore being amongst its system, it makes the will of God necessary to be known for His protection and safe keeping over them. Persistence and boldness is needed of believers when they present requests to God on behalf of others. Intercessors need to be faithful and bold in their appeals to God. As God is bold yet patient, so too an intercessor must be toward Him in the urgency of petitions of all kinds.
Answers to prayer may not come immediately and believers are encouraged to continue in earnest prayer, persistently with patience and perseverance and at times have a willingness to wrestle for the desired outcome of pursuing His will.
For an Old Testament example of intercessory prayer is found in Daniel 9 and for a New Testament example is said by Jesus in John 17 as He prays for His Apostles and future believers. The Bible also gives many examples both throughout the Old Testament and the New Testament of repeated prayer requests on behalf of another.
An intercessor is committed to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and has a heart felt inward desire that comes from the Holy Spirit.
Intercessors should wait on God and not assume the outcome by forging ahead and committing the sin of presumption.
